Back in 2017, the Harvard Business Review conducted a study uncovering the most valuable employee benefits according to job seekers. 88% of respondents said that more flexible hours was a key factor when considering whether or not to accept a job, on par with consideration of health, dental, and vision insurance.
Another 80% ranked work from home options as a top consideration, with candidates willing to consider lower-paying job opportunities in order to access these benefits.
In a more recent study conducted by Microsoft in 2021, 73% of employees want to maintain flexible or remote work options post-pandemic. In a separate study conducted by WeWork, 75% of employees surveyed said they would be willing to give up at least one benefit or perk, including healthcare coverage, cash bonuses, and paid time off, for the freedom to choose their work environment. Finally, a survey by Robert Half revealed that 34% of respondents working from home currently because of the pandemic would rather look for a new job than return to the office full time.
While the world around us feels very different than it did in 2017, one thing remains constant -- the high desire employees place on working at organizations that empower them to strike the right balance between working from an office and working remotely.
Why flexible work matters to your employees
Over the course of the pandemic, we’ve been able to uncover the benefits of working remotely. Some of the top benefits as reported by employees include:
- Spending more time with loved ones
- Making health a priority
- Spending more time on professional growth
- Time to continue their education
How flexible work benefits you as an employer
In addition to the personal benefits listed above, employees also reported feeling like the performance and quality of work was better than the year prior, and that they were actually able to better focus on work from home.
Offering a flexible work environment also allows you to pull from a much broader talent pool than you may have previously been able to access. The more flexibility you can offer, the more competitive they will be when it comes to attracting and retaining talent.
